Anna Maria Island information

Bradenton Beach
A charming and vibrant community of 1,500 located at the southern end of Anna Maria Island. The Island is located at the southern entrance to Tampa Bay on the Gulf of Mexico. The island is shared with sister cities of Holmes Beach and Anna Maria City. Access to Anna Maria Island can be achieved from the mainland (Bradenton) via bridges on Cortez Road or Manatee Avenue or from Longboat Key to the south via the bridge over Longboat Pass The city boasts miles of uninterrupted supervised public sugar sand beaches on the Gulf side and calm docking and mooring areas on the mangrove lined bay side. You can fish from the popular City Pier, which features a full service Cafe and where bait is available. Inshore and offshore fishing tours are also readily available from local Guides. There are a number of Parks within city limits, including beachfront with picnic facilities and public restrooms. There are numerous public accesses to the beach.

The History of Holmes Beach
In 1896 Sam and Annie Cobb homesteaded 160 acres from Gulf to Bay, the area now called Holmes Beach. In addition they purchased a 10-acre strip from John Jones, whose homestead adjoined theirs, and built a dock. In 1902 the first island post office was established in Sam Cobb's house. Sam was the only government representative on the island. Before, residents had to row across the bay to Perico Island for mail. The few hardy island residents helped each other build homes. They hacked through the jungle to create a sandy washboard road and laid logs across streams and swamps. Rattlesnakes, wildcats and panthers lived in the island jungle. At the end of World War II Jack Holmes, a developer with a dream, created a 600-acre community in the center of the island. In 1948 an airstrip was built as a landing strip for small planes. The City of Holmes Beach was incorporated in 1950. The first mayor, Halsey T. Tichenor, served from March 14 1950 to March 20, 1951. The Manatee Avenue Bridge was completed in 1957. In 1964 the bridge toll was withdrawn. In 1970 an airplane accident signaled doom for the airstrip. Despite a Save Our Airport campaign the airport closed in 1973. The Martinique Condominium was completed the same year. The seven-story condo was the island's first and only high-rise.

The City of Anna Maria
A residential community, situated at the northern end of Anna Maria Island. The city is known for its beaches, friendly people and laid-back lifestyle. We're proud of our wildlife in Anna Maria. The entire city is a bird sanctuary and you can see many species of water and shore birds here. Our aquatic life is remarkable too. You'll find bottlenose dolphins and manatees in our waters, and the fishing, both for sport and for the table, is excellent. Our beaches are also a prime nesting ground for endangered loggerhead turtles and many of our residents actively participate in their protection.
