Subject: Uhaul an it's Big Mess!!!

Hi, my husband and I just read several complaints from your email regarding the way U-Haul treated you and so many other trusting customers. We too, have been emotionally hurt by U-Haul and the way they've treated our family belongings and the TOTAL disregard and disrespect that they've shown us! Due to the lack of procedure (in their part of course) we have lost family helium, family photo's ( of our children from being in my womb to present), business equipment, important contacts information, personal information, medical information, tax information  OUR WHOLE LIFE!!!!. Although my husband and I are fully aware that our life long property will never be replace. We still hold U-Haul responsible for their lack of commitment to us as customers. They have pride themselves on being a company you can trust with your belongings ( when you store your property in their storage) and when you put your life in their hands (getting behind the wheel of their vans or trucks). It is time for U-Haul to be responsible for what they've done!

I have had severe issues with U=Haul.. its been a month and I'm still getting the run around.

After renting a truck, and driving it off the lot, one hour later I discovered a 9 inch cut (which I could fit my hand in ) in the back right tire of the large truck I rented.

I could have been killed driving this, and received no sympathy or even an apology from anyone involved in the company. I came across similar stories on a website and saw your e-mail.

do you want to know more about my story?

Negligent Rental was what the PA U-Haul Claim rep called our claim back on 7/11-02.  But we still cannot get them to settle the claim - they have not even offered us a settlement.

We have @ $10,000 worth of damaged items setting in our driveway and garage.  We provided them with a detailed spreadsheet listing the damaged items and what the damage was, we labeled the color photos to coincide with spreadsheet and we provided them with receipts on the high dollar items.

What can we do to get a favorable settlement?

I came across your U-Haul experience.  I just had a terrible experience with U-Haul on a move from Orlando to St. Louis.  Three trucks, three dangerous breakdowns including an exploding engine, and when they transferred my contents from Truck #1 to Truck #2, they did such a poor job that virtually everything I own has been damaged.

I would appreciate your letting me know about any contacts you have investigated.  U-Haul is getting sued over this one.

Thanks

Subject: uhaul-Jennifer Flachman

Hello! I would like for you to understand that the complaints that you are posting on your web site are ligitimate. We rented a truck from seneca south carolina from The Grand Rental Station that was filthy, gas gage did not work, dash lights did not work, air did not work, truck ran hot the entire trip to the point that we had to stop every few hundred miles to allow the truck to cool down. After complaining to Jennifer Flachman, public relations manager, we were told that nothing was wrong with the truck and therefore uhaul would accept no liability. We also spoke with Mr Ron Putman the regional president for the area of South Carolina who reiterated Mrs Flachmans statement. Mrs Flachman, when asked also stated that Mr Shoen, president did not deal with issues of this nature and was a very busy man. I guess that is why uhaul has so many complaints in virtually every state that they operate in. It is my intentions to file suit against this company for their sheer negligence.

Subject: U-Haul Rentals

Hello,

I called a U-Haul Dealer here in Albuquerque, to express safety

concerns. He said that I must contact the dealer who rented to me. That

is in Clinton Township, Michigan near Detroit. Get U-Haul's point?

I barely left the Detroit Area when I noticed a transmission leak.

Next day a U-Haul Service Center could find nothing wrong, after a non-

service U-Haul did see the leak. I went on and later that afternoon,

June 26, 2002 the leak got worse. I called the Hotline, 800-528-0355.

This independent service center in Girard, near Eire, Pennsylvania hired

movers to transfer my belongings to another truck. They did not do a

very good job of securing things. The mechanic there said the leaky

truck, EL1608a, Arizona registered, must be towed to Pittsburgh for

repairs.

The auto-transport straps holding my minivan later came loose.

Fortunately chains held it O.K. See AT4674J, License # YD033L(Florida)

Dave-

Feel free to post my email. Leave out my name if possible, i am considering talking with OSHA about the uhaul violations i am aware of. One such case you may find interesting is uhaul's practice of having AMF's (area field managers) move trailers around on the tops of their trucks. Yes the AFM's trucks are built for this purpose but uhaul, at least in my case, gave little to no instruction on the proper method of winching trailers up on the trucks. In one case while half way up the trailer broke free, the cable went flying past my head and the trailer rolled down off the truck into a parked car. When i asked another seasoned AMF if there was a manual showing proper hook ups and methods for each trailer for this procedure he said yes it's right here in my head. If hit that cable would have taken my head right off! That was a typical response, proper training and safety are of know concern, just get the job done. I was not a long term employee at uhaul, long enough to see it was not a company i wanted to be associated with.

If i can be of any assistance to you in the future feel free to contact me.

Dick

P.S. - I know of one case where the inside of a uhaul trucks cargo box started on fire damaging the renters contents, (the truck boxes are built by uhaul, faulty wiring) this person called every uhaul phone number he could find left messages and not a one was returned. I was sent to pick up the auto transport he was towing. My phone call for directions was the first contact from a uhaul employee he had received. Republic Western Insurance Company (of course owned by uhaul) had in time contacted him. He told me all he wanted  from uhaul was the show of a little concern for the problems and damage their equipment had caused, that was too much for uhaul to do . He also will never have any dealings with uhaul in the future.

Dave-

I am a past UHAUL emp. and can tell you first hand what you already know. UHAUL only cares about UHAUL, and the bottom line (orange dollars as they call them). They treat their emp. worse then their customers, if you can believe it. Lying, misleading, swearing and lack of concern for safety, is the UHAUL way. In the short (thank god) time i worked for them i saw numerous OSHA violations and had to listen to countless customers and independent dealers complaints. In the future i will have nothing to do with this corrupt company.

Man am I glad to see someone is out there voicing hate for this company. They should all eat shit and burn in hell.

Here is the story I posted on Eopinions:

U-Haul is by far the worse company I have ever done business with. I reserved a truck from them 3 months in advance. They called me and confirmed everything. They said that I could pick it up at 8am. The day before I am moving I call customer service to make sure everything is still on. A very rude customer service lady gets on the phone after being on hold for 30 minutes. I simply tell her that I want to confirm that I will have a truck in the morning. She says, "We are still working on getting people trucks for today so we can't help you right now!" This was very odd as it was already 2pm. She types away on the computer and confirms that I do have a reservation, but then says that there are no trucks available. I say, "When might I be able to get a truck." She says, "Oh, about 7pm, maybe." Well this is a big problem since I have to be out of my rental house by 3pm. I hang up. I call back, hoping to get someone nice on the phone. (fat chance) So this time I get a guy. He tells me a very similar tale, "We are still working on getting people trucks for today, call back tomorrow." I tell him that that is not an options. He says, "Well there is absolutely nothing you can do." So I told him to cancel my reservations. He says, "Gladly, good luck finding a fucking truck you stupid piece of shit." I told him, "Anything beats doing business with you." Click...he hangs up. To make a long story short, NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH U-HAUL!!! I got a truck from Ryder, no problem.

Dave

Thanks for the great Web Site! I will be posting my story soon.
Do you have any idea what happens if I refuse to pay U-Haul?

The Truck I got was a 19 FT Diesel with 300K on it,the Steering was so loose had to fight it every inch of the way from Phoenix,AZ to Portland ,OR. with in the first 20 miles the A/C went out,300 mile the Speedometer broke then the Brakes, was over heating every time I pulled a hill, then when I got to Portland and got up the next morning it was pretty cold the Pre-heater for starting the Engine was not working and of course the Heater Fan also quite.

Really feel ripped off! Wish I new how to take it some place where the D.O.T would inspect it, they would with out a doubt Red Tag it and U-Haul would have to use a Tow Truck to retrieve it!

Any ideas?

Thanks! Paul

Dave,

FYI: This is what I sen to Uhaul.

Gentlemen,

Although I rented a vehicle from you 2 years ago (it broke down 500

ft. from my former residence), I also drove a vehicle of yours for a friend and

my co-worker recently had an issue as well and I thought it would be a good time

to inform you that there are major safety concerns with many of your Uhaul

franchises. The 1st vehicle I rented from you made it a whopping 500 ft. down

the street. I opened the hood to find a new motor had just been installed

(hastily I might add)but that clamps were missing from the power steering hoses

and many of the wires were tie-wrapped to the engine compartment. Turns out that

the battery and alternator needed to be replaced. My belongings spent the night

on the street. After moving all the next day and night I was not to happy to

learn I was traveling down I84 with NO running lights, brake lights etc. The

next experience I had was while helping a friend move. I had the truck parked at

the top of his driveway, parking brake on, when I suddenly heard the rush of air

commonly associated with air brakes. The brake "mysteriously" released itself

and I had to dive into the truck to prevent it from rolling down the hill into

the street below. I now just learned my co-worker (Chris Tomaino) just rented a

truck from you and had problems with the rear brake lights.

You could start by enforcing that your franchisees practice safety inspections

and don't do their own overhauls if they are not qualified to do so. Tie-wraps

on engine overhauls is not a good idea, and tail lights would help at night.

Regards, Chris Lundgren

Dear Dave and Annamaria, I sent you an e-mail on April3,2002 informing you of

how I had rented a U-haul truck that hit my parked car after the emergency

brake went on the truck, you responded and told me to keep in touch.  Well, I

did as you said, I went to my lawyer with a police report, pictures, two

estimates, the U-haul contract along with the $14.00 safe-move contract, and

a written statement of everything that had occurred, and each person that I

had spoken to, also the shop manager(Martin) who was so rude, and did not

give me another truck, or my deposit back.  I contacted my lawyer, a

settlement was reached, I should receive my settlement letter today, the

lawyer sent the letter out two weeks ago, but through the anxiety of the

accident I gave the wrong city, and zipcode(smile), but now my lawyer

received the returned settlement papers, and resent it to my correct address.

I will let you know the outcome of my damaged  Saturn, I informed my lawyer

that I also expect U-haul to place my in a rented car while my car is being

prepared, I had to take a chance and drive my wrecked car to and from work,

Howdy sir, my name is Dave. I was getting ready to look on line at uhaul and saw your report.  I epriciate the info.  I'm moving from Virginia to Montana and don't need any problems.  I'm a truck driver by trade.  What size truck did you rent from u-haul?

Did they show you an inspection report or service report?  It is always a good idea to ask to see these documents and get a copy because if anything happens to you or your property, you will have the right to sue.  If any company doesn't give you this info for any reason, don't do buisness with them and report it to the BBB.  It is also a good idea to check out a company through the BBB to see if any complaints have been made in the past.
Once again,  I'd like to know what the size of the truck was.

      Thank you very much,

Subject: U-haul truck destroyed my car while it was Parked

Dear Dave, God bless you, today I had a terrible experience with a U-haul

truck, before telling you what happened I can say that I was sitting here

with half of my stuff already moved, without a truck because of an accident,

and I found the website about U-haul trucks, and I was glad that you were

able to tell me who to contact.  Well, today 4/3/02, I rented a U-haul truck,

while the truck was at my new residence,(it was in park, with the emergency

brakes on!!!!)  I looked and the truck rolled and hit my car, then it ran

into my new  landlords fence, he has 6 acres of land.  I called the police,

and put in a police report, then I called the 1-800-528-0355 number on the

back of their pamplet to report the accident, then they told me I had to call

the U-haul shop at !-888-355-6587 after receiving a claim number, I called

the U-haul shop number, then they told me that a technician would come out in

45minutes, the technician came, he was more concerned about the rear-view

mirror on the truck, than me and my safety, he tied some type of string

around the rear-view mirror, backed up the truck, and stated, "Yep, there is

definitely trouble with the emergency breaks on this truck", then he tells me

that I had to drive the truck back to where I got it from, I told him that I

was afraid to drive the truck, and that I was told after he arrived, and saw

that there was a problem, that he was suppose to get me a truck, he said that

guy with him did not have driver's licensce , so he was not able to take the

truck, I was so upset, because they had already inconvenience me with the

unsafe truck, and then they said nothing about the damage to my car!!!!  It

has lost value on it, even though it was a 1993 Saturn, it was still my car

and only source of transportation .  I called diferent numbers, and I still

do not have a truck, after I saw they was not going to help me, I attempted

to let my God-son drive the truck, because I was so nervous, truck swayed

back and forth.  I am going to call my lawyer in the morning, I actually went

to the nearest U-haul to try and get another truck, and they did not have

any, the two they had they said was rented already, U-haul roadside could not

find me a truck no-where in my county!!!!  So here I sit with things still

needing to be moved, and no-way to move it, when I asked for my deposit back,

I was told that there was no money at the store I rented it from, and I would

have to go there in the morning.  I will let you know the outcome!!!!

Subject: letter sent to Uhaul today

Dear Jennifer,
As per our previous contact you are aware that on contract 236456667
the Florida department of Transportation has cited U-Haul for 18 serious safety violations that could have killed my daughter Mary and her younger brother while Mary was driving the truck from Westfield Ma. to Orlando Florida. My daughter was also issued a written warning herself for driving  unsafe/faulty/defective equipment Florida statute 316,610 . This has all been filmed over the past days and documented as you might be aware of by Channel 2 news in Orlando including the filming of the DOT inspection as well as some comments on film from U-haul employees. I have received NO and I repeat NO satisfaction from U-haul concerning the fact the the Westfield Ma. Store General Manager Mr. Raheim Ellerbee Knowingly and purposely gave my daughter a truck that could have caused her as well as her brother the loss of there lives and I will have no alternative but to seek legal council on Friday morning to take civil action against U-Haul Corp. for the acts of there employee acting under the direction of U-Haul Corporation.

Subject: Loss of U-haul trailer

On August 8th of 2000 I had an accident while towing a

5 X 8 Uhaul trailer. I was in the process of moving to

Chicago, IL. and was on a return trip to Minneapolis,

MN. with an empty trailer. I had checked the

connection several times because the trailer just

seemed to jerk and bounce a lot. Each time I had

checked, everything seemed to be O.K.

Going through Wisconsin westbound on I-90/94 I felt a

jarring action and the trailer then began to fishtail

violently. The trailer whipped around, and caused my

vehicle to do a 180 degree turn. I was then facing the

wrong way in traffic and then hit head on. A semi

truck carrying heavy machinery was headed right for

both of us (myself and the car that hit me head on) He

went for the ditch but caught the side of the car that

hit me and ripped it open like a can-opener.

After it all stopped, the trailer laid on its side,

with the doors open. The state patrol officers on the

scene stated that the trailer was improperly connected

(it was connected at Uhaul) and all I did was to

repeatedly check the connection for tightness. I was

then given a $150.00 traffic citation by Wisconsin

(which I never paid) because I wanted to fight it but

couldn't. Therefore I am forbidden from driving in the

State of Wisconsin because they say my "priveliges" of

driving in that state have been revoked.

Upon getting a new trailer to finish my move, it was

then discovered that the wiring connection also was

hooked up incorrectly (ALSO done by Uhaul) My vehicle

did survive the accident. But upon driving back

through Wisconsin again I was pulled over by Wisconsin

State Patrol for my tail lights being burned out. All

but one light worked. I was given a citation for that

and when I FINALLY was able to get rid of the trailer

at Uhaul in Chicago, I presented the agent with the

ticket and asked to get a copy of it and I was told

"NO"!

Dealing with Uhauls insurance company was another

nightmare. The only 2 regrets I have from the whole

ordeal is that I regret EVER renting from Uhaul and

that I regret not calling an attorney right afterward,

I waited a couple months after I had grown tired of

dealing with Uhaul myself, but every attorney I spoke

to then told me I called too late and that it would be

too tough to win then. But I am STILL to this day

February 18th 2002 dealing with my Insurance company

on this matter, because they are trying to deal with

Uhaul.

Subject: hi

Hello, after reading your web page, i feel that i need to tell you something else that happened to our family. On June 6, 2001 my father rented a uhaul truck to deliveer some furniture to a woman. When renting this truck, the uhaul store released it to my dad with a broken parking break. The driveway to the woman house was very steep, and as my dad backed the truck up, it began to lurch and threw him from the truck. He was run over and killed. I am a fifteen year old girl without a dad. If you have any ideas of ways we can make this know so other do not get hurt too, please email me back. Thanks for your time.

Subject: Please Read--From UHAUL General Manager

Importance: High

Dear Mr.Billings,

As a General Manager of a UHAUL Moving Center, I feel that I MUST

respond to some of the customer complaints that have been posted on your

website.  First, I would like to address some general complaints, then I

would like to address 2 selected letters form your web site.

I must also add that I  MUST remain anonomys due to company regulations,

and the desire to keep my job.

   GENERAL COMPLAINTS:

One of the most common complaints that I hear is that the customers

had problems with the truck/trailer.  After every rental, the truck/trailer

undergo a

"safety certification."  This includes a walk-around of the truck, to check

for new damage.  This is usually done before the returning customer

recievies his/her

deposit back.  After the customer has left, the truck is checked more

carefully.  This check includes; the trucks fluids, lights, brakes,

steering, cab, and tire

pressure.  If the truck does not pass the check, whatever is wrong with it

is corrected.  If the personell at the center cannot fix it, the truck is

"grounded"(not

rentable) until it can go to the repair shop to be fixed.

Even though we inspect the truck before it goes back out, freak things

may occor during the rental time.  A few examples include, flat tire,

blowout, dead

battery, failure to start (This occours more often on Diesel trucks, as too

much moisture in the gas tank will prevent the truck from starting), and

transmission

failure.  If any of the above listed, or major accidents happen, the Phone

number to call is the 24 Hour Emergency Hotline (1-800-528-0355). The

hotline will

attemept to dispatch some one to look at the truck, and if need be swap the

truck for another truck at a nearby UHAUL Center (Over 1,100 in the USA and

Canada).  However, the swapping of trucks is limited to normal store hours

(Mon.-Thu.--7am-7pm//Fri.--7am-8pm//Sun.--9am-5pm) and if replacement

equipment is available.  Just as on your own personal vehicle, bad things

could happen, without warning--no matter how good you take care of it.

FUEL POLICY

Printed on each and every contract it is stated that you pay for any

fuel used, or PAY a 20 dollar fueling fee, and 2 or 3 dollars a gallon for

estimated fuel

used (A UHAUL rep. will make the determination of the gallons)

RENTAL POLICY

Just because you rent a truck, it DOES NOT automatically give you the

truck for 24 hours.  You get the equipment for the agreed upon rental time

UP TO

24 hours.(If the equipment is available).  Normally equipment may not be

rented for more than 24 hours at a time. (There are exceptions to the rule,

but

management approval is required and it is not given very often).

WHY WON'T PEOPLE GET THE INSURANCE?????

The answer is simple, people don't want to spend anymore money than they

have to.  But for an extra 14 dollars, alot of the complaints about

accidents/damages would have been taked care of by UHAUL.  After you are in

an accident, that does lets say 5 thousand dollars of damage to the truck,

if

you purchased the insurance, you come in fill out a damage form, and that is

it.  But if you did not purchase the insurance, you are responsible for the

full 5

thousand dollars.  (Regardless if your insurance company covers it or not)

DOLLIES AND PADS

The next one is about the dollies and pads in the back of the

trucks.  If you are renting one of the centers' local trucks, a dolly and

pads WILL be in the

back of the truck.  These items CANNOT BE REMOVED.  They occupy very little

sapce, and the mounting brackets for the cage, and the dolly are built-in to

the truck.  The charge is 5 dollars for the pads, and 5 dollars for the

dolly.  If the truck is returned with the seals broken, YOU WILL BE CHARGED.

( There

are VERY FEW exceptions to this rule, and require management approval.)

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO IF YOU RENT A UHAUL

YOU NEED TO DO THIS BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE LOT WITH THE TRUCK!!!

    1. Do a quick walkaround inspection of the truck noting any damage to

the truck, if there is damage notify the UHAUL rep. on duty for a waiver

form.(NOTE THIS IS NOT REQUIRED IF YOU PURCHASE THE SAFEMOVE / SAFETOW

INSURANCE)

    2. Double check the gas reading on the contract, with the gas reading on

the truck, as well as the miles on the contract, and on the truck (THEY MUST

MATCH BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE LOT)

    3. If renting a local truck, equipped with a dolly and furniture pads,

make sure there are seals on the items, and count the pads. (There will be

one dolly, and

six pads).

    4. If the lot is large enough, drive the truck around the lot a few

times to test acceleration, brakes and steering.  If the lot is not big

enough, drive it around a

few blocks, if something is not right RETURN IMMEDIATLEY TO THE CENTER-DON'T

WAIT TOO LONG-10min TOPS!!!

    5. If you are renting a trailer, it is your responsibility to provide

working lights, and the correct hitch class.  UHAUL can install custom

hitches for almost

any vehicle.  The center personell can and will assist you in hooking up

your trailer to your vehicle, as well as help get your lights working.

HOWEVER: IT IS

ULTIMATLY YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO PROVIDE WORKING TRAILER LIGHTS (REQUIRED BY

LAW)  UHAUL WILL NOT PAY ANY

TICKETS RESULTING FROM NON-FUNCTIONAL LIGHTS!!

    6. GET THE INSURANCE!!  Many car insurance companies, and credit card

companies will cover rental cars. ALMOST ALL DO NOT COVER

RENTAL TRUCKS!! THIS IS USUALLY AN OPTION THAT IS OVERLOOKED, AND USUALLY
